The 1. Panzerdivision formed in October 1939 from the 3. Leichte Division which had fought in Poland. It was assigned to 12th Army during the initial attack on France and then assigned to the Panzer Group Guderian for the final attack. It remained in France until December 1940 in the area of Epinal. Afterwards it was transferred to the Reich and in March 1941 to France again and then in April to the Eastern Front.

The division was equipped with Panzer I, II and Panzer 38(t).
